1 John 1 (2007)

It's a good thing that there were so many empowered eye witnesses to the resurrection, because the first-century equivalent of spin doctors were on the job immediately.  They said, among other things, that Jesus was able to come back after death because he had never been a real, bodily person.  John says, "Oh no.  We are talking about what we know.  We saw him – not just saw but looked at him very closely.  We heard him.  We even touched him with our own hands.  What we know, we are telling you!" 


1 John 2 (4/16/09)

I have told you before that John's Greek is very easy to read. Nevertheless, John's level of spiritual understanding is way above mine, and that sometimes makes his easy Greek hard to understand. So I'm going to summarize his argument here:

1. God is light.

2. If we walk in darkness – i.e., do what we shouldn't or fail to do what we should – we are not in fellowship with God.

3. If we walk in the light – i.e., do what we should and refrain from doing what we shouldn't – we will be in fellowship with each other and with God and his son Jesus Christ.

Fellowship with other Christians is not an optional part of Christianity.
 
In December 2015, 75% of Americans said they were Christians [1], but only 42% of Americans attended worship regularly in March 2009 (according to another poll apparently no longer posted as of October 2019). Some of the latter are Jews and Muslims, so let's say that 40% of Americans attended church. That means that 47% of American Christians do not get together regularly with other Christians. You can't be in fellowship with someone you don't see or know or think about or write to. John says, if you aren't in fellowship, your joy cannot be complete.
